Superhighway To Prosperity: Sokoto-Badagry Project Set To Transform West Africa

The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway project is a significant infrastructure development initiative in Nigeria, designed to boost trade and economic activities across West Africa.

The project involves constructing a 1,068-kilometer superhighway that spans across several states, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, and Lagos, connecting to Badagry.

This highway is expected to serve as a Trade, Transport, and Security (TTS) Greenfield corridor, promoting regional trade and cooperation with neighboring countries like Niger and Mali. The project is valued at over N1.8 trillion, making it the single largest project ever undertaken in Nigeria. Its massive scale underscores the government’s commitment to transforming the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

The construction of the superhighway is being carried out in phases, with the first phase covering 120 kilometers in Sokoto State. The highway will feature a six-lane design, with three lanes on each side separated by landscaped medians. Rigid concrete pavement will be used to ensure the road’s durability, reflecting the government’s focus on building long-lasting infrastructure that can support the region’s growing economic needs.

According to the Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, the project is a “game changer” that will revolutionize transportation, strengthen regional integration, and open vast economic opportunities across the states it traverses and neighboring countries. The government has also taken steps to ensure the project’s smooth execution by engaging eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to defend it against potential legal challenges.

The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway project is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at encouraging infrastructure development and uplifting socio-economic activities in the country. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, commended President Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to bring the project to fruition, describing it as a payback to the people of Sokoto for their massive support during the 2023 polls. With this project, the government is not only investing in infrastructure but also demonstrating its commitment to delivering on its promises and fostering economic growth.
