The Supreme Court is gearing up to assess the governorship election appeals in Ebonyi and Benue States, led by Justice John Okoro and a panel of five justices.
Notably, Governor Hyacinth Alia and his deputy, Sam Ode of Benue State, are personally attending the hearing.
In the Benue State governorship battle, Titus Uba, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, is challenging the victory of Governor Hyacinth Alia from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite the Court of Appeal Abuja affirming Alia’s election, Uba contends that the forgery allegations against Deputy Governor Sam Ode should be addressed at the high court. The court previously cited jurisdictional issues in the petition.
Moving to Ebonyi State, the Court of Appeal Lagos upheld Francis Nwifuru’s election as the duly elected governor. Chukwuma Odii of the Peoples Democratic Party filed the appeal, which was unanimously dismissed by a three-member panel led by Justice Jummai Sankey.
The court asserted that the PDP and its candidate lacked the legal standing to interfere in the internal affairs of the All Progressives Congress concerning candidate nominations.
As the Supreme Court takes center stage in these pivotal cases, the political landscape in both Ebonyi and Benue States stands at a crossroads. The decisions expected to be made by the esteemed justices hold the potential to reshape the gubernatorial dynamics in these regions.
