The recent Labour Party convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, has stirred controversy following the re-election of Julius Abure as the national chairman for a second term.
The convention, which saw Abure securing unanimous support from delegates, has been met with opposition from key party figures, including the suspended National Treasurer, Mrs. Oluchi Opara.
Opara vehemently condemned the manner in which the convention was conducted, labeling it as a gathering of Abure’s support group rather than a legitimate political convention. She criticized the secrecy surrounding the event, alleging that it lacked transparency and inclusivity.
In response, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, defended the convention’s legitimacy, stating that it was conducted in accordance with the party’s rules, electoral laws, and constitution. He urged party members to set aside their differences and work towards the party’s goals under Abure’s leadership.
However, tensions within the party have escalated, with the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also expressing dissatisfaction with Abure’s re-election. The NLC had previously called for Abure’s resignation and raised concerns about the party’s control.
Despite the dissenting voices, Abure’s supporters remain unmoved, stating the need for unity within the party ranks. They assert that the convention’s outcome reflects the will of the majority and signals a renewed focus on the party’s objectives.
