Syrians Celebrate End Of Assad Era With Mass Rallies

Syrians Celebrate End Of Assad Era With Mass Rallies.

Massive celebrations erupted across Syria as citizens marked the end of over five decades of authoritarian rule under the Assad regime. Images from Damascus, Aleppo, and Latakia showed jubilant crowds taking to the streets following the seizure of power by the Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) last Sunday.

Former President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia with his family after rebels captured Damascus. Russia has granted them asylum, marking the conclusion of Assad’s long-standing grip on power.

 A New Era of Leadership

Rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, has pledged accountability for officials implicated in torture and announced plans to shut down infamous Assad-era prisons. Speaking to supporters, he emphasised a commitment to justice and stability, signalling a shift from the oppressive policies of the former regime.

Interim Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir attended Friday prayers at the iconic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, where he addressed worshippers. This marked the first Friday prayers since the regime’s collapse, and the event drew hundreds of attendees who later joined the celebrations in nearby squares.

Diplomatic Moves to Stabilise Syria

The international community is responding swiftly to Syria’s political transformation. Members of the G7 nations convened virtually to discuss support for an inclusive and non-sectarian government. The proposed framework aims to rebuild the nation while avoiding further sectarian conflicts.

In Latakia, a former Assad stronghold, celebrations continued despite initial fears of violence. The statue of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar’s father, now lies in ruins, symbolising the end of the family’s dominance. Rebel forces have maintained peace in the region, easing concerns of retribution.

 Potential Deal with Russia

Despite the regime’s fall, Russia retains a significant presence in Syria, with its military bases and deep-water ports in Latakia remaining operational. HTS has cautioned civilians to stay clear of these sites but is reportedly open to a deal allowing Russia to maintain its bases. Analysts suggest this could be part of HTS’s strategy to gain legitimacy on the global stage.

The People’s Victory

Crowds in Damascus’s Umayyad Square waved Syrian opposition flags and chanted revolutionary slogans. Among the celebrants were HTS fighters, whose role was pivotal in the regime’s downfall. The atmosphere was both festive and surreal, with figures in combat gear standing alongside Syrians in costumes, highlighting the blend of relief and hope for the future.

As Syria enters this new chapter, the nation faces immense challenges. However, the overwhelming sense of liberation displayed during these rallies underscores the people’s determination to build a freer and more equitable society.
