Khalil Haqqani, Afghanistan’s Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, has been killed in a suicide bombing at his ministry in Kabul. The attack, which also claimed the lives of six others, marks the most high-profile casualty within the Taliban since their return to power in 2021.
Interior ministry sources reported that the blast occurred as Haqqani was leaving his office. The Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating via its Amaq news outlet that a militant had detonated explosives outside the minister’s office.
Khalil Haqqani was a senior member of the powerful Haqqani network, a faction within the Taliban. Designated as a global terrorist by the United States, Haqqani had a $5 million reward placed on him by U.S. authorities. His family holds a significant role within the Taliban, with his nephew, Sirajuddin Haqqani, serving as the current interior minister.
This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a regional affiliate of IS and a major rival to the Taliban. Although the overall security situation in Afghanistan has improved since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, the country still experiences regular bombings and suicide attacks, many of which are attributed to ISKP.
Khalil Haqqani’s death highlights the persistent instability in Afghanistan, even under Taliban rule, and raises questions about the group’s ability to maintain security amidst internal and external threats.
