Taraba State Reinstates History In Primary School Curricula

In a bid to enhance the educational landscape in the state, the Taraba Government, under the leadership of Governor Agbu Kefas, has unveiled plans to reintroduce history as a subject in the basic education curriculum for primary schools.

The announcement was made during a dinner hosted by Governor Kefas for journalists in Jalingo on Sunday. The move follows the removal of history from primary and secondary education curriculums nationwide during the 2009/2010 academic session.

Notably, the Federal Government had taken a step towards reinstating history in November 2022, reintroducing it as a standalone subject in the basic education curriculum across Nigeria after a 13-year absence.

Governor Agbu Kefas emphasized the importance of history in the development of society, stating, “No society will truly develop without its inhabitants having a good knowledge of their history.” The decision reflects a broader acknowledgment of the vital role historical awareness plays in shaping the progress and identity of a community.

During the dinner, Governor Kefas urged journalists to actively monitor the implementation of the state government’s free education policy in primary and secondary schools. He emphasized the need for journalists to ensure that all school administrators are adhering to the right standards.

In recognition of the media’s role, Governor Kefas commended journalists for their objective reportage and pledged to support the press further. He promised to renovate the Press Centre in Jalingo and provide operational vehicles to various groups under the Nigeria Union of Journalists, demonstrating his commitment to a thriving partnership with the media.

Former Taraba Commissioner for Information, Danjuma Adamu, emphasized the importance of considering journalists as partners in progress. Commissioner for Information, Hajiya Zainab Jalingo, echoed this sentiment, calling for continued collaboration with journalists to better serve the people of the state.

Leaders of the Taraba Nigeria Union of Journalists, including Matthew Jen and Gabriel Yough, assured the governor of their commitment to continued objective reportage for the benefit of all stakeholders.
