The remains of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, arrived Benin City on Saturday, September 27, 2025, to an emotional reception by top security officials, representatives of the Edo Government, and family members.
The Nigerian Air Force flight NAF 031, which conveyed the body, touched down at the Benin Airport at 1:25 p.m.
The reception was attended by senior police officers, including Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Sulaiman Dogo, and Edo Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika. Alhaji Gani Audu, Chief of Staff to Governor Monday Okpebholo, led the state government’s delegation and described Arase as “one of the finest police officers Nigeria ever produced”.
Audu noted that Arase’s death was a huge blow to both the nation and his home state, Edo. “His demise is a huge blow to both the nation and his home state, Edo. We will work with his family to determine how to immortalize him,” Audu stated.
Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector General of Police from 2015 to 2016 and was the immediate past Chairman of the Police Service Commission. He was widely respected for his reformist approach and emphasis on intelligence-led policing.
The Edo State government plans to work with Arase’s family to determine how to immortalize him. Arase will be buried on October 3 at his residence in Benin City.
The late former IG was praised for his compassion and ability to listen to people and solve problems. “He was a team player and a compassionate leader who listened to everyone and tried to solve problems,” Audu added.
The government and people of Edo State mourn the loss of a distinguished son who left an indelible mark on the nation’s policing history.
