Ten Hag Frustrated As Controversial Penalty Hands Manchester United 2-1 Defeat To West Ham.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed frustration following his team’s narrow 2-1 loss to West Ham at the London Stadium, criticising the decision to award a late penalty that sealed United’s fourth Premier League defeat of the season.
United controlled much of the match and missed numerous scoring opportunities in the first half, setting them up for what looked like a comfortable win. However, a late twist saw referee David Coote signal for a penalty after a lengthy VAR review of Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings. Despite United’s appeals, Coote upheld the decision, allowing Jarrod Bowen to convert from the spot in injury time.
Speaking to *Match of the Day*, Ten Hag voiced his concerns over the interference of VAR: “Before the season, there was instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes. That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on-field referee.”
The defeat dropped Manchester United to 14th in the league, sitting just below West Ham, who climbed to 13th with the win. Following the match, Ten Hag reportedly sought clarification from the officiating team regarding the contentious penalty call, which he felt was “unfair and unjust.”
This result adds to United’s challenging start, with only three wins in their first nine league games, leaving Ten Hag’s squad looking to regroup and push up the Premier League table as the season progresses.
