President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated his longtime ally and friend, Senator Abu Ibrahim, as he marks his 80th birthday.
The President described him as a principled leader and statesman whose loyalty and service to Nigeria have remained exemplary. He noted that Ibrahim’s contributions to the nation’s democratic growth continue to inspire younger generations.
In a statement issued on Monday, Tinubu recalled their friendship which began during their time in the Senate in 1992 under the aborted Third Republic. While Senator Ibrahim represented Katsina South under the National Republican Convention, Tinubu served Lagos West under the Social Democratic Party. He said their relationship was built on shared values of justice, fairness, and dedication to good governance.
The President praised Senator Ibrahim’s courage during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, especially after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He recounted how both of them stood firm against military rule despite the consequences. “He stood in the line of fire when we reconvened the Senate in Lagos. Our defiance earned us weeks in detention. When the authorities released him and left the rest of us, Abu refused to leave, insisting we all be freed together,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu also applauded Ibrahim’s contributions to the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013 and his unwavering support during the 2023 presidential campaign. He described him as a man of vision and conviction whose political wisdom continues to guide the nation’s democratic path. The President noted that Senator Ibrahim remains one of the most respected politicians in Nigeria due to his humility and consistency.
According to Tinubu, the former senator’s integrity and leadership have influenced many young leaders who now serve in various capacities across the country. He added that Ibrahim’s lifelong dedication to national unity and development makes him a rare and distinguished figure in Nigeria’s political history.
The President prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Senator Abu Ibrahim, wishing him many more years of good health, strength, and fulfillment. He said the government and people of Nigeria are proud to celebrate a leader who has always stood for democracy and the advancement of the nation.
