In a bold move signaling Nigeria’s renewed commitment to space exploration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate release of funds for the maintenance of the nation’s space assets, emphasizing the strategic importance of space technology in national development.

Historic First Meeting of the National Space Council

The directive came during the first-ever meeting of the National Space Council, held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to implementing Nigeria’s revised 25-year roadmap for space development.

“I hereby approved that cost of the implementation of the approved revised 25-year roadmap for the implementation of the national space policy be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council for consideration and approval,” the President stated.

Nigeria’s Space Ambition: From Sidelines to Center Stage

President Tinubu made it clear that Nigeria will not merely watch developments in space from the sidelines. “We will participate, we will compete, we will contribute. Our space ambitions must be anchored in outcomes, accountability, and national value,” he asserted.

He emphasized that the space programme is not an abstract pursuit but a practical tool to benefit ordinary Nigerians—from farmers and teachers to entrepreneurs, soldiers, researchers, and policymakers. “This is how a nation turns attitude into advantage,” he noted.

Space Technology as a Driver of Socio-Economic Growth

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the administration plans to leverage space technology as a catalyst for socio-economic improvement.

President Tinubu highlighted that investments in the space sector will boost:

  • Precision agriculture

  • Early warning systems for floods and fires

  • Smarter cities and safer skies

  • Stronger communications and cybersecurity

  • A globally competitive digital economy

“The space economy is rapidly growing and is expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2040. When we invest in space, we are not funding a distant dream,” the President stressed.

Strengthening Regulatory Frameworks and Accountability

To ensure responsible use of space assets, President Tinubu directed the Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), to enforce regulations and spectrum management frameworks under the NASDRA Act 2010.

He also called on all ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), and the private sector to comply with these regulations and facilitate timely release of approved funds through the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Landmark Decisions for Nigeria’s Space Industry

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Kingsley Udeh, described the meeting as historic, with outcomes set to transform Nigeria’s space ecosystem. Key decisions included:

  • Approval of Conditions of Service and Staff Regulation for NASRDA to align with international best practices, retaining top Nigerian talent.

  • Formation of a working group of space experts to revise the 25-year national space programme roadmap. Members include NASRDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Defence Space Agency, NIGCOMSAT, and other stakeholders.

  • Approval for the development and operationalisation of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Space Centre in Ekpe, enabling Nigeria to launch and maintain satellites independently, reducing reliance on foreign expertise.

Nigeria’s Space Future: Strategic, Sovereign, and Ambitious

President Tinubu framed the space programme as a critical pillar for national development, technological advancement, and economic diversification. With his directive and the council’s resolutions, Nigeria is positioned not only to safeguard its space assets but also to stake its claim in the growing global space economy.

According to him, the centre would provide Nigeria with the capacity to launch satellites into orbit, while reducing dependence on foreign expertise not only to host the satellites but also to maintain them.

“The confidence of a nation that refuses to be trapped by the limits of yesterday is being invested here. We are funding national security, prosperity, and progress,” President Tinubu concluded.
