What Tinubu Told Nigerians After Speaking With Anthony Joshua On His Accident

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has provided a detailed update on the condition of Nigerian-British heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

The update was disclosed in a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirming that President Tinubu personally spoke with the boxer and his mother via telephone after the incident.

“He Is Receiving the Best Care” — Tinubu

According to the statement, President Tinubu said Anthony Joshua assured him that he is receiving the best possible medical treatment in Nigeria.

“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” the President said.

The President described the incident as deeply painful, particularly due to the loss of lives, and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.

Call to Joshua’s Mother and Hospital Visit by Ogun Governor

President Tinubu also revealed that he spoke with Anthony Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort. According to him, she expressed gratitude for the President’s concern and outreach.

In addition, Tinubu confirmed that he contacted Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was physically present at the hospital where Joshua is receiving treatment.

“I also spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” Tinubu stated.

Earlier on Monday, President Tinubu—who is currently outside the country—had issued a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep sympathy for Joshua following the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The Crash and Immediate Aftermath

On the morning of Monday, Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious vehicle accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The SUV in which Joshua and several associates were travelling collided with a stationary truck near Makun, leaving two occupants dead and leaving the 36-year-old boxer with minor injuries. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

In the same message, President Tinubu praised Anthony Joshua’s discipline, courage, and patriotism, describing him as a symbol of national pride.

“As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” he said.

President Tinubu concluded by calling for unity and compassion during the difficult period, while offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident.
