Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga has revealed that President Bola Tinubu was fully aware of an unfolding political plot linked to recent developments in the United States and took early steps to safeguard Nigeria’s interests.
He noted that the President was not caught off guard by the situation, as he had already taken proactive measures to ensure stability.
Onanuga explained that despite concerns raised by the US political climate and statements made by US President Donald Trump, Tinubu maintained a strategic approach to protect Nigeria diplomatically. He said the President closely monitored the situation and worked quietly with key international partners to avoid any negative impact on the country.
According to Onanuga, Tinubu’s early anticipation of the situation helped Nigeria maintain calm, even as tensions grew over Trump’s comments and the reactions they generated. “President Tinubu was ahead of what was coming. He was not sleeping on the matter, he acted early and was well prepared,” Onanuga stated.
He further stressed that Tinubu’s leadership style involves staying ahead of potential threats and planning long before issues escalate. He added that those who assumed the government was unprepared were mistaken. “People think we are just reacting now, but the President had taken steps long before the noise started,” he said.
Onanuga urged Nigerians to remain confident in the President’s diplomatic judgment, emphasizing that Nigeria would not be destabilised or influenced by external political agendas. He noted that the Presidency would continue to communicate necessary information to the public when required.
He also assured that the government is committed to strengthening foreign relations, protecting the country’s global image and ensuring that no foreign political unrest spills over to affect Nigeria. He called on citizens to verify information and avoid panic driven by misinformation.
