Covenant University Tops TIMES Higher Education Rankings For Nigeria’s Best Universities In 2025.

Covenant University in Ogun State has been named Nigeria’s top university in the 2025 TIMES Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, solidifying its reputation as a leader in academic excellence. The prestigious list, which evaluates institutions based on teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, places Ahmadu Bello University in second place, followed by Landmark University in Kwara State, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Lagos, rounding out the top five.

 

The rankings, published on the THE website, highlight Nigeria’s growing prominence in higher education, with 25 institutions recognised among the country’s finest. Notable performers include Bayero University Kano (sixth), Federal University of Technology, Akure (seventh), and Federal University of Technology, Minna (eighth). The University of Benin and the University of Ilorin complete the top ten, showcasing a blend of federal, state, and private universities excelling across diverse metrics.





 

Covenant University’s consistent dominance, marking its third consecutive year at the top, has been attributed to its strong research output, modern facilities, and emphasis on innovation. Ahmadu Bello University’s rise to second place reflects its robust academic programmes and contributions to northern Nigeria’s educational landscape. Landmark University, a private institution, continues to impress with its focus on agricultural innovation, while the University of Ibadan and University of Lagos maintain their status as pillars of academic tradition and urban excellence.

 

The list also celebrates institutions like the University of Nigeria Nsukka (11th), Ekiti State University (12th), and Obafemi Awolowo University (19th), which have made significant strides in research and community impact. Emerging universities such as Federal University Oye-Ekiti (15th) and Akwa Ibom State University (23rd) highlight the growing quality of newer institutions. The rankings reflect Nigeria’s diverse higher education ecosystem, with federal universities like Nnamdi Azikiwe University (18th) and state institutions like Lagos State University (17th) earning recognition.

 

According to the TIMES ranking for 2025, here are the top 25 universities in Nigeria:

The TIMES rankings, widely regarded as a global benchmark, assess universities on 13 performance indicators, including teaching quality, research environment, and industry collaboration. Nigeria’s strong showing underscores its potential as a hub for academic excellence in Africa, despite challenges like underfunding and strike actions. The Federal Ministry of Education has welcomed the rankings, with Minister Hannatu Musawa stating, “This achievement reflects the resilience of our universities and their commitment to global standards.”

 

As Nigeria’s higher education sector continues to evolve, the 2025 rankings spotlight the nation’s academic leaders, inspiring institutions to strive for greater innovation, research impact, and global competitiveness.
