Nigerian Man Fatally Shot by South African Traffic Officers On N12

"Four Traffic Officers Arrested Following Fatal Shooting of Nigerian National on Klerksdorp Highway"

“Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, a 37-year-old Nigerian, was fatally shot during a traffic stop on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, North West Province, an incident that has ignited public outrage and intensified scrutiny of police practices in South Africa.”

Four Traffic Officers Taken Into Custody

Authorities confirmed that four traffic police officers, aged between 25 and 36, have been arrested in connection with the shooting. According to the North West Police, the officers fled the scene after the shooting but were later tracked down by detectives in Klerksdorp.

They now face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice, signaling possible attempts to cover up their actions.

Details of the Fatal Pursuit

Investigations indicate that Onu, reportedly legally residing in South Africa, was pursued by the officers during a routine traffic check around 3 a.m. on December 17. During the chase, he was shot, and his vehicle was later found stalled on the opposite side of the highway.

Colonel Adéle Myburgh, spokesperson for the North West Police, confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the traffic officers had already left before other police units arrived on the scene.

Forensic Evidence and Court Proceedings

Police have seized the firearms used by the arrested officers, which will undergo forensic ballistic testing as part of the investigation. The four officers are scheduled to appear in Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo commended the detectives’ rapid response and emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in cases involving police shootings.

A Pattern of Violence Against Foreign Nationals

This killing adds to a worrying series of attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. Earlier this year, in July 2025, two Nigerians, Austin and Ayo, were murdered by masked gunmen in Durban after the assailants stormed their office in the evening.

Such incidents have fueled concerns among the Nigerian community and human rights organizations about the safety of foreign nationals and the conduct of law enforcement officers.

Calls for Justice and Accountability

The latest tragedy has reignited debates about police practices and xenophobia in South Africa. Community leaders and activists are urging that the investigation be transparent, thorough, and impartial, stressing the need for justice not only for Onu but also for the broader Nigerian community living in the country.
