Tragedy Strikes Lagos As Container Truck Crushes Tricycle

A devastating accident occurred on Tuesday at Ijora Causeway in Lagos, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a serving police officer and a female passenger.

The incident happened when a 40 foot container truck with registration number XP 368 AKD overturned and landed on a commercial tricycle marked KJA 364 QN.

The accident occurred beneath the Ijora Bridge, inward Ijora 7Up, and was attributed to the truck’s loss of control while attempting a dangerous maneuver. Preliminary findings by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the truck’s reckless move led to the fatal crash.

Two people died instantly in the accident, while two others, including the tricycle operator, sustained severe bilateral leg fractures. The injured victims were rushed to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, for urgent medical care by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

The remains of the police officer were conveyed to a morgue at Yaba, while relatives of the female victim retrieved her body at the scene. Security operatives from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri divisions prevented angry residents from setting the truck ablaze during the rescue operation.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare Oki, described the accident as “deeply grievous and most regrettable” and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for the swift recovery of the injured victims and urged truck drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly around bridges and congested roads.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reiterated its call for truck operators to be cautious and avoid reckless maneuvers to prevent similar incidents in the future. The authority praised the prompt intervention of emergency and security agencies, which prevented further fatalities and escalation of the crisis.
