Tragedy Strikes Vancouver Festival As Vehicle Attack Leaves 11 Dead

Tragedy Strikes Vancouver Festival As Vehicle Attack Leaves 11 Dead.

A celebration turned to heartbreak on Saturday evening when a vehicle drove into crowds at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, leaving at least 11 people dead and dozens injured.

The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. as festival goers gathered to enjoy food, music, and community spirit. Moments after Apl.de.ap, a Filipino-American rapper and founding member of the Black Eyed Peas, had completed a headline performance, a black Audi SUV bypassed a portable barrier and entered the pedestrian area packed with people.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle initially moved slowly before accelerating, striking numerous attendees who were visiting food trucks and vendor stalls. “All of a sudden I hear this exhaust and the sound of acceleration,” said Kris Pangilinan, a vendor at the scene. “Then, boom: he hits dozens of people.”

Police officers, assisted by bystanders, quickly moved to help victims, using tables from nearby stalls as makeshift stretchers. The victims ranged in age from five to 65 years old.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by members of the public before being taken into custody by Vancouver Police. Authorities have since charged him with eight counts of second-degree murder, with further charges expected.

Interim Police Chief Steve Rai confirmed that while the driver had a history of mental health issues and prior interactions with police, the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism. Prime Minister Mark Carney reassured the public, stating, “We do not believe there is any active threat to Canadians.”

British Columbia Premier David Eby described the act as “intentional,” expressing his sorrow for the families affected. Throughout the night and into Sunday, members of Vancouver’s large Filipino community gathered to support one another and determine the fate of loved ones.

The Lapu Lapu Festival, meant to celebrate Filipino culture and community, instead ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving the city mourning on what should have been a beautiful day of celebration.
