Tragic Loss: Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga Passes Away At 60.

The House of Representatives has confirmed the passing of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip, who succumbed to a brief illness on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. She was 60 years old.

Akin Rotimi, the spokesperson for the lower legislative chamber, shared the news in a statement released late Wednesday night.

Born on December 2, 1965, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. Her political journey began when she was first elected in 2019 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Her dedication to public service was evident from her role as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, where she was instrumental in pushing for policies that bolstered women’s empowerment and social welfare.

Re-elected in 2023, she assumed the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, where she was celebrated for her leadership, commitment to legislative order, and her unique ability to navigate complex parliamentary procedures. Known affectionately as ‘Ijaya,’ her colleagues and constituents admired her for her intellect, passion, humility, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Rep Onanuga’s contributions to Nigeria’s political arena were profound. She was a beacon of hope and change, focusing her legislative efforts on improving the quality of life for her constituents and all Nigerians. Her work laid down foundations for future legislative initiatives in social development and gender equality.

Akin Rotimi expressed, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State – especially the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency – and all members of the National Assembly. As we mourn this vibrant and dedicated lawmaker, whose life was dedicated to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially her constituents, her legacy of service and commitment will continue to inspire future generations.”

Details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by her family. In this time of mourning, the nation reflects on Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga’s impactful legacy and her indelible mark on Nigerian politics.

“May her soul rest in peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire generations to come,” concluded Rotimi in his statement.
