Tragic One As Nigerian Boxing Champion Olanrewaju Segun “Success” Dies In Ghana Bout.

The boxing world is in mourning following the untimely death of former Nigerian National and West African light-heavyweight champion, Olanrewaju Segun, widely known as “Success,” who passed away during a match on Saturday evening, 29 March 2025. The tragic incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League, casting a sombre shadow over the sport.

Success, a celebrated figure in Nigerian boxing, was facing Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu when he suddenly lost consciousness mid-bout. Despite immediate efforts by medical personnel to revive him, the 40-year-old succumbed to what reports suggest may have been a cardiac arrest. The exact cause of death remains under investigation, with the boxing community awaiting an official statement from the Ghana Boxing Authority.

A respected athlete, Success boasted a professional career spanning 24 fights, securing 13 victories—12 by knockout—alongside eight losses and three draws. His prowess in the ring earned him accolades across Nigeria and West Africa, where he was admired for his skill and determination. Saturday’s bout had seen him reportedly leading on points before the devastating collapse, a moment captured in a viral video now circulating online, showing the fighter stumbling and falling to the canvas.

This tragedy echoes a similar incident in December 2022, when Chukwuemeka Igboanugu, a boxer representing Imo State, collapsed during the National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State. Competing in the 86kg category, Igboanugu was knocked out by Anambra State’s Prince Gaby Amagor and, despite swift medical attention, was pronounced dead shortly after. Such events have reignited discussions about safety protocols in the sport, with calls for stricter health checks and emergency response measures.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with fans, fellow boxers, and officials remembering Success for his contributions to boxing. “He was a true champion, not just in the ring but in spirit,” said Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, in a statement to TheCable. “His loss is a blow to us all.”

The Bukom Boxing Arena, a renowned hub for Ghanaian boxing talent, fell silent as the news spread, underscoring the risks athletes face in this high-intensity sport. As investigations continue, the focus now turns to honouring Success’s legacy while addressing the urgent need for enhanced safety standards to protect future generations of boxers.

Olanrewaju Segun “Success” leaves behind a remarkable record and a grieving community, united in their admiration for a fighter who gave his all until the very end. His memory will undoubtedly endure in the annals of African boxing history.
