Tragic Truck Crash In Jalingo Market Leaves Many Feared Dead.

A horrific accident at the bustling Mile 6 Market in Jalingo, Taraba State, has left an unconfirmed number of traders and shoppers feared dead, with many others injured. The tragedy occurred around midday on Saturday, 28 June 2025, when a tipper truck loaded with sand lost control and ploughed into the crowded marketplace, causing widespread devastation.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was travelling at high speed when a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the busy market, a popular trading hub in the state capital. Among the victims was Cynthia Jonathan, a graduate of Taraba State University, who was killed at her point-of-sale stand. The exact number of casualties remains unclear as emergency responders continue to assess the scene, but authorities have confirmed at least one death and five serious injuries.

Musa Ibrahim, a local vendor, described the chaos: “It happened so fast. The truck was speeding, and after the tyre burst, the driver couldn’t stop it. It just rammed into the crowd.” The driver has been arrested and is in custody as investigations into the cause of the crash continue. Preliminary reports suggest that excessive speed and possible mechanical failure contributed to the disaster.

The Taraba State government has yet to issue an official statement, but residents have expressed grief and shock at what has been described as one of the worst market accidents in recent years. Emergency services are working tirelessly to assist the injured and provide support to affected families. The incident has sparked calls for stricter road safety measures and regular vehicle inspections to prevent similar tragedies.

As the Jalingo community mourns, there is a collective demand for swift action to address the aftermath and ensure justice for the victims. The Mile 6 Market, a vital economic hub, now faces a sombre recovery as residents come to terms with the profound loss caused by this devastating crash.
