AFCON 2025: Traoré Named Match Official For Super Eagles-Tunisia Showdown

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), has appointed Malian referee, Boubou Traoré to officiate the highly anticipated Group C clash between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match, scheduled for Saturday, December 27, is a pivotal fixture that could shape the race for qualification from one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

Refereeing Team and Match Details

CAF’s Refereeing Committee named Traoré as the centre official for the encounter, entrusting him with oversight of what promises to be a tightly‑contested battle. Supporting Traoré, Senegalese official Issa Sy has been assigned as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), highlighting CAF’s emphasis on accuracy and fairness in match management.

The match will kick off at the Fez Sports Complex under the lights, with both teams entering on three points after successful opening games – Nigeria edging Tanzania 2–1 and Tunisia dominating Uganda 3–1.

High Stakes in Group C

This clash isn’t just another group fixture — with the top two teams from Group C advancing to the knockout stages, a positive result here could virtually secure progression for the winner. A draw would still keep both teams poised but would add pressure going into the final round of fixtures.

Nigeria, boasting three AFCON titles (1980, 1994, 2013), are determined to build on their opening win and establish momentum toward continental success. Tunisia, chasing their second AFCON crown following their sole triumph in 2004, have shown clinical attacking intent — scoring freely in their opener.

Traoré’s Appointment: A Vote of Confidence

The appointment of Traoré, one of the continent’s respected referees featured on CAF’s official match officials list for the tournament, underscores CAF’s intention to ensure strong officiating standards in marquee matches. His selection also reflects broader confidence in his ability to manage high‑pressure games involving Africa’s top national sides.

With refereeing often under the spotlight in major tournaments, CAF’s decision aims to provide both teams with a neutral and experienced official to oversee proceedings as they vie for early control of the group standings.

Looking Ahead

As preparations ramp up in Fez, Nigeria and Tunisia are locked in tactical and psychological build‑ups for what many pundits expect to be one of the standout matches of AFCON 2025.

For the Super Eagles and the Carthage Eagles alike, victory is not just about three points — it’s about setting the tone for a deeper run in Africa’s most prestigious football competition.
