Troost‑Ekong Quits International Duty, Explains Decision

William Troost-Ekong has revealed the reason behind his decision to retire from international football ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, bringing an emotional chapter of Nigerian football to a close. The 32-year-old made the announcement via a heartfelt message on social media on Thursday, surprising fans who had expected him to lead the Super Eagles in Morocco.

A Glorious Career

Troost‑Ekong has been a stalwart of the Super Eagles since 2015, earning 83 caps, scoring eight goals, and captaining Nigeria in multiple high-profile tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.

Recently, he was named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for AFCON 2025, a nod to his enduring leadership even as he played a bit-part role in recent outings.

The former Watford centre-back has been battling the physical toll of professional football, including a hamstring injury that required surgery last year. Despite these challenges, he remained committed to the national team until this point.

Why He Stepped Aside

In his statement, Troost‑Ekong explained that it was the right time to step aside and allow the new generation of players to lead. “Now is the moment for them to claim that,” he told The Standard. “The team is ready because we’ve got great leaders. I think there is a natural progression and there is an art in knowing when to step away.”

His decision reflects both personal and professional considerations: the lingering effects of injury, a desire to ensure the team’s long-term success, and a recognition that leadership must eventually pass to younger players.

Legacy and Impact

Troost‑Ekong’s retirement marks the end of an era for Nigerian football. Known for his resilience, tactical awareness, and composure under pressure, he has been an anchor for the national team — famously forming a formidable defensive partnership with Leon Balogun in what fans dubbed the “Oyibo Wall.”

Beyond the pitch, Troost‑Ekong leaves a legacy of inspiration. Young Nigerian players continue to cite him as a role model, motivated by his dedication, humility, and leadership.

Troost‑Ekong’s Words

Reflecting on his decision, Troost‑Ekong said:

  • “Every single time I put on that iconic shirt … I have lived my dream.”

  • “There is a natural progression … and there is an art in knowing when to step away.”

  • “Now is the moment for the new generation to shine.”

Farewell, Not Goodbye

While Troost‑Ekong steps away from playing internationally, he remains committed to Nigerian football. He intends to continue mentoring young talents and contributing to the game off the pitch.

For the Super Eagles and their fans, his retirement closes a storied chapter but signals hope for a new generation of players ready to build on the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most respected captains.
