Trump Administration Pressures Ukraine For Ceasefire As High-Level Talks Begin In Saudi Arabia

Trump Administration Pressures Ukraine For Ceasefire As High-Level Talks Begin In Saudi Arabia.

The Trump administration believes Ukraine’s leadership is prepared to move forward with negotiations on a ceasefire with Russia, according to a senior US State Department official. The remarks come as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz are set to arrive in Saudi Arabia for talks with Ukrainian officials on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept a swift ceasefire with Moscow. However, despite the push for peace, the US has not offered an immediate security guarantee to Kyiv.

Tensions Between Trump and Zelensky

Just ten days ago, Trump and Zelensky clashed publicly at the White House, with Trump asserting that the Ukrainian leader was not yet ready to end the conflict. The dispute reportedly led to a breakdown in relations between the two leaders, resulting in the US pausing military aid to Ukraine and suspending intelligence-sharing.

Since then, efforts have been made to repair diplomatic ties. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, revealed that Zelensky had sent a letter to Trump expressing “regret” over the incident and conveying a “sense of gratitude” for US support.

High-Stakes Talks in Saudi Arabia

The upcoming negotiations in Jeddah mark a critical moment in the ongoing war, which began in February 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.

While Zelensky is also travelling to Saudi Arabia for a separate meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he is not expected to participate directly in discussions with US officials. Instead, Ukraine will be represented by key members of its leadership, including his chief of staff Andriy Yermak, the national security adviser, as well as the country’s foreign and defence ministers.

A US State Department official, speaking anonymously, suggested that Ukraine’s willingness to engage at this level indicates a readiness to move forward. “The fact that they’re coming here at senior levels is a good indication to us that they want to sit down and they’re ready to move forward,” the official said.

In his nightly video address on Sunday, Zelensky said, “We hope for results – both in bringing peace closer and in continuing support.”

Ukraine Seeks Security Guarantees, US Pushes for Concessions

The US has been exerting considerable pressure on Zelensky to make concessions in peace negotiations, while the Ukrainian leader has insisted on firm security guarantees from Washington. He has repeatedly stressed that Putin has violated previous ceasefire agreements and that Ukraine cannot afford to trust Moscow without binding assurances.

Any pressure that the US may be placing on Russia to make similar concessions has not been disclosed publicly. However, reports suggest that in Saudi Arabia, US officials will discuss a “framework” for peace, with the aim of advancing negotiations.

Strategic Interests and a Major Minerals Deal

Beyond the ceasefire talks, discussions in Jeddah may also revive a significant minerals agreement between Ukraine and the US. The deal, which was reportedly derailed by the White House dispute, would grant the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth mineral reserves in exchange for security commitments.

Such a partnership would be strategically important, given the global demand for rare earth minerals used in advanced technologies, including defence systems and renewable energy production.

Trump’s Shifting Position on Military Aid

One of the most consequential outcomes of the White House clash was the US decision to pause all military assistance to Ukraine. However, when asked on Sunday whether he would lift the suspension of intelligence-sharing, Trump hinted that the restrictions were already being eased.

“Well, we just about have,” he said. “I mean, we really just about have, and we want to do anything we can to get Ukraine to be serious about getting something done.” He did not provide further details.

Meanwhile, before the recent tensions between Washington and Kyiv, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia on 18 February. This meeting followed Trump’s controversial phone call with Putin, which had already raised questions about the US president’s approach to the Russia-Ukraine war.

A Defining Moment for Ukraine and the US

As diplomatic talks unfold in Saudi Arabia, the stakes remain high for Ukraine’s future and its relationship with the US. While Washington continues to push for a ceasefire, Kyiv remains cautious, seeking guarantees that any agreement will not leave Ukraine vulnerable to future aggression.

Whether these negotiations will bring meaningful progress towards ending the war remains to be seen. However, with Trump’s firm stance and Ukraine’s delicate position, the next steps could reshape the trajectory of the conflict and its impact on global geopolitics.
