Trump And Zelensky Hold ‘Symbolic’ One-On-One Meeting Amid Rising Tensions

Trump And Zelensky Hold ‘Symbolic’ One-On-One Meeting Amid Rising Tensions.

United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a private meeting on Saturday, on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ burial in Rome, against the backdrop of escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting, described by President Zelensky as “symbolic” and potentially “historic,” was held as the leaders discussed urgent matters concerning peace and the future of Ukraine.

Following their discussion, Zelensky posted: “Good meeting. We discussed a lot one-on-one. Hoping for results on everything we covered. Protecting the lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out.”

This meeting followed recent warnings issued by President Trump. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump cautioned that Ukraine could face another three years of conflict and risk losing the country to Russia if a peace deal is not pursued. He criticised Zelensky’s refusal to recognise Russia’s occupation of Crimea, calling it “an inflammatory statement that will make a peace deal with Russia harder to achieve.”

Trump stated: “The situation for Ukraine is dire — he can have peace or he can fight for another three years before losing the whole country,” stressing that Crimea was “lost years ago” and should no longer be considered negotiable.

Tensions between the two leaders have flared previously, notably following a heated exchange involving Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Zelensky at the White House earlier this year.

Meanwhile, peace negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and European officials appear to have stalled. Talks earlier this week collapsed, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelling a planned trip to London and discussions being downgraded.

Amid the diplomatic turmoil, Ukraine has continued to suffer attacks. Zelensky today accused Russia of committing a “deliberate war crime” after a drone strike in the Dnipro region killed nine civilians. The attack targeted a bus carrying workers from a mining and processing plant, injuring more than 40 people, many of them women.

“An ordinary bus. Clearly a civilian object, a civilian target,” Zelensky said, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

As the conflict deepens, the outcome of the Trump-Zelensky meeting could prove critical in determining whether a path to peace remains possible in the near future.
