US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at cutting off federal funding used to support undocumented migrants, the White House has announced.
The order instructs federal departments and agencies to identify government-funded programmes that provide financial assistance to individuals residing in the US unlawfully and take corrective action.
According to a White House fact sheet, the directive also prohibits federal funds from being used to support ‘sanctuary’ policies in states and local communities that provide protections to undocumented migrants. Additionally, it mandates stricter eligibility verification processes to prevent benefits from being allocated to individuals who are not legally present in the country.
“This ensures that taxpayer resources are not used to incentivise or support illegal immigration,” The White House statement read.
The order marks the latest step in Trump’s immigration policy since he assumed office last month. The president has pledged to tighten immigration laws and reduce government spending on undocumented migrants.
However, reports indicate that undocumented immigrants are already largely ineligible for federal benefits, except in specific emergency situations. According to The New York Times, many of the financial benefits in question are already restricted to legal residents and US citizens.
Trump’s move is expected to face legal and political challenges, particularly from states that have enacted sanctuary policies to protect undocumented migrants. Critics argue that the policy could put vulnerable individuals at greater risk, while supporters see it as a necessary step to uphold immigration laws and protect taxpayer funds.
