BREAKING: PDP Crisis Deepens As Turaki Faction Surrenders Rivers Structure To Wike

Factional crisis forces Turaki-led leadership to fold Rivers structures into Wike’s camp.

In a dramatic shift that marks a new phase in the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP), deepening crisis, the Tanimu Turaki-led leadership of the PDP has reportedly collapsed its party structure in Rivers State into the camp aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The move — described by political watchers as a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections — follows weeks of factional tensions that have roiled Nigeria’s main opposition party and raised questions about its future as a viable national platform.

What Happened?

According to a breaking report, the Turaki faction, originally at odds with Wike’s group, has effectively folded its Rivers State party apparatus into Wike’s camp. This means that party structures at ward, local government, and state levels are now reported to be under the influence or control of the minister-aligned faction.

This development underscores the severity of internal divisions within the PDP — once Nigeria’s dominant political party — as competing leadership claims generate conflicting authorities across states.

Background to the Crisis

The PDP officially fractured late in 2025 after national disputes over party leadership escalated into parallel structures:

  • Tanimu Turaki was elected National Chairman at the PDP’s Ibadan convention, an event that saw the expulsion of several leaders, including Wike and other senior figures, for alleged “anti-party activities.”

  • In response, Wike’s faction, which rejects the Turaki leadership, maintained its own national committee under Abdulrahman Mohammed and retained loyal state executives, including in Rivers State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has intervened in the dispute, summoning both factions to meetings in Abuja in an effort to clarify leadership recognition ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Implications for Rivers State Politics

The collapse of Turaki’s Rivers structure into Wike’s faction could have profound implications:

  • Political Control: Rivers, once a PDP stronghold, has been in political flux amid internal party battles, defection of lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and shifting allegiances.

  • 2027 Prospects: A unified Rivers PDP under Wike might reshape the opposition’s strategy in the oil-rich state. However, it also raises questions about party identity and loyalty, as some see alignment with national power as a tactical maneuver rather than ideological unity.

  • Legal and Electoral Recognition: With Turaki’s faction dissolving its state structure, recognition by INEC and the courts remains a key wild card that could redefine who legitimately represents the PDP in Rivers and beyond.

Voices on the Ground

While details remain fluid, party officials linked to Turaki’s camp confirmed the collapse of the Rivers structures into Wike’s fold. Sources close to Wike indicate that this move aligns with broader grassroots support across local governments and wards.

Political analysts say the development may signal a tactical convergence born of necessity rather than ideological harmony — a testament to the PDP’s crisis which has seen governors, lawmakers and party executives defect, realign or re-brand their loyalties in recent months.

What’s Next?

With key stakeholders calling for peace talks, reconciliation efforts, and legal clarification, the PDP’s future in Rivers — and nationally — remains uncertain.

The party’s ability to present a united front ahead of general elections will be critical, with this latest collapse of structure highlighting both vulnerability and the potential for realignment within Nigeria’s political landscape.
