Elon Musk, who recently renamed the defunct Twitter social media app to X, has said is company will now allow paid users to download videos shared by other subscribers. All new videos on the microblogging platform will be eligible for downloads.
However, there are a few limitations to downloading certain videos.
Twitter, whose brand name is now X has updated a Help Center article titled “How to share and watch videos on Twitter.” In this update, the company confirmed that Blue subscribers can now download videos.
Limitations of X video downloads
Twitter/X has added an age limit for downloading videos from the platform. The download option will remain disabled for accounts that are held by users under the age limit of 18. Moreover, if the user who has uploaded the video specifically doesn’t want other users to download the video, users won’t be able to do it.
Also, if a Twitter Blue-subscribing account is set to private, every user won’t be able to see the video, let alone download it.
Videos on such accounts will be available only to users that the paid subscriber has been allowed to follow. Paid users can also choose to allow selected videos for downloading. However, the updated company page didn’t mention how to disable download for each tweet.
Twitter also started allowing Blue users to upload two-hour-long videos. However, this feature has become a problem for the company. Some users uploaded entire movies, such as Super Mario Bros. that was released this year, on the platform. Such a feature can attract legal trouble for the company if it doesn’t add moderation capabilities that can handle copyrighted materials.
Musk plans for X
Musk has been trying to make Twitter into a super app which will also become more appealing to creators. The company recently implemented ad revenue sharing for the platform.
Adding the video download feature will help X to compete with other video-sharing platforms like TikTok and Instagram. both social media platforms allow users to download videos.
