In a move towards reinforcing international cooperation, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard R. Verma met with Seychellois Foreign Minister Sylvestre Radegonde at the Fourth Conference on Small Island Developing States.
The discussions underscored the shared commitment of the United States and Seychelles to addressing climate change and enhancing maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean.
Deputy Secretary Verma commended Seychelles for its proactive approach to climate issues, highlighting President Ramkalawan’s leadership in SIDS DOCK, a coalition of small island nations working on sustainable energy solutions. The meeting also covered crucial aspects of maritime security, emphasizing Seychelles’ role in prosecuting piracy and its involvement in the Combined Maritime Task Force (CMF) and Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG).
Additionally, the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Victoria was recognized as a pivotal step towards deepening bilateral relations. The dialogue reflected both nations’ dedication to collaboration through the Indian Ocean Rim Association and the Indian Ocean Commission.
