In a special online briefing hosted by the U.S. Department of State’s Africa Regional Media Hub, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Administrator Michael S. Regan, shared insights from his recent mission to Mozambique and Ghana, emphasizing the EPA’s commitment to collaborating on environmental priorities in Africa.
During the briefing, Administrator Regan highlighted various initiatives aimed at addressing environmental challenges across the continent.
The EPA’s commitment includes sharing solutions on clean air protection, responsible mining practices, enhanced recycling efforts, and fostering cultural and environmental exchanges between American and Ghanaian schools.
Administrator Regan announced significant developments from his visit, including the installation of a new air quality monitor at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, in collaboration with the Mozambican government. The monitor is part of a global network displayed on EPA’s AirNow website, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their health.
Additionally, the EPA will provide technical assistance and guidance to support responsible mining operations in Mozambique and address the impact of coastal erosion in collaboration with local advocates.
The agency will host webinars and conferences, contributing to capacity-building initiatives on issues such as e-waste management and cookstove research.
One of the key highlights of Administrator Regan’s mission was the announcement of a twinning programme between schools in his home state of North Carolina and schools in Ghana, fostering cultural and environmental exchanges. The programme aims to empower women and ensure gender equity in environmental education.
Administrator Regan expressed gratitude for the warm reception in both Mozambique and Ghana, emphasising the significance of his mission as the first black man to lead the EPA. The Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to global environmental partnerships and sustainable practices was reiterated, with a focus on clean air, clean water, and promoting healthy living conditions worldwide.
The EPA Administrator concluded the briefing by thanking all those involved and expressing optimism about the potential for meaningful partnerships and positive environmental impact resulting from his mission.
