The United States Mission to the United Nations (USUN), under the leadership of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield showcased significant achievements in 2023, emphasizing American leadership on various global fronts.

The mission played a pivotal role in advancing U.S. interests and pursuing the policy goals of the Biden Administration.

Throughout the year, USUN prioritized humanitarian relief efforts, actively combatting global food insecurity, and rallying international cooperation to reinvigorate efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The mission also staunchly defended human rights and upheld the fundamental values outlined in the UN Charter. Notably, USUN consistently addressed Russia’s violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response to conflicts worldwide, USUN led initiatives to foster peace, holding those responsible for atrocities accountable. The mission actively addressed the crisis in Haiti, contributing to the authorization of a Multinational Security Support mission aimed at tackling gang violence and promoting stability. Additionally, USUN played a crucial role in addressing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) ballistic missile launches, emphasizing Security Council unity.

USUN, with Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield at the helm, embarked on a comprehensive agenda to modernize UN processes and workforce, enhancing efficiency and aligning with the Biden Administration’s initiatives on democracy, youth engagement, and workforce diversity.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield’s extensive travels to 12 countries and nine U.S. cities underscored the mission’s commitment to promoting U.S. foreign policy priorities globally.

The mission also prioritized global food security, addressing the issue through the adoption of a Security Council Presidential Statement condemning the use of food as a weapon of war. USUN’s efforts culminated in a U.S.-drafted communique signed by nearly 100 UN Member States, further emphasizing the commitment to ending the use of food as a tool of conflict.

In terms of global development, USUN elevated the importance of Sustainable Development Goals, with the U.S. joining the SDG Political Declaration during the 2030 Agenda Summit. The mission also spearheaded efforts on health-related issues, including pandemic preparedness and response, universal health coverage, and the fight against tuberculosis.

The defense of human rights remained a core focus for USUN, addressing violations in conflict zones and promoting initiatives for the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women and girls in Afghanistan. The mission consistently shed light on human rights situations in the DPRK, working towards international awareness and action.

USUN furthered its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by engaging with underrepresented communities, hosting events, and advocating for LGBTQI+ issues in the UN’s Economic and Social Council.

In pursuit of UN modernization and reform, USUN championed responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, advocated for Americans in elected UN positions, and played a crucial role in peacekeeping reform, pledging funds to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

The accomplishments in 2023 reflect the unwavering commitment of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in promoting global peace, addressing humanitarian challenges, and advancing U.S. diplomatic priorities on the international stage.
