The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has returned to Washington following an eight-day diplomatic tour in the Middle East.
During his visit, Secretary Blinken engaged in multiple high-level meetings with key officials from both the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority, as well as leaders from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Throughout his trip, Secretary Blinken emphasised several key points. Firstly, he reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself against threats from groups like Hamas.
This support was stated as unwavering. At the same time, he expressed the U.S. commitment to the aspirations of the Palestinian people who have been affected by acts of terrorism by Hamas.
The need to establish mechanisms to protect civilians in Gaza and provide humanitarian assistance was also stressed.
Secretary Blinken made it a priority to convey these messages to every official he met, emphasising the importance of securing the release of hostages and preventing further escalation of the conflict.
On his return to Israel, he reiterated these points on behalf of not only the United States but also other regional actors who share the view that Israel has a right to self-defence and are concerned about the well-being of innocent civilians.
The ongoing efforts include providing Israel with necessary assistance to counter Hamas and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Ambassador David Satterfield, recently appointed as the Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues, engaged with Israeli and Egyptian officials to work out the mechanisms for implementing the framework negotiated by Secretary Blinken. This framework received commitments from both Israel and Egypt.
Efforts to secure the release of hostages remain a top priority, and the message to countries and entities hostile to Israel is crystal clear: they are urged not to become involved in the ongoing conflict.
