In a press release from the Office of the Spokesperson, it has been announced that Under Secretary of States for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, is set to embark on a diplomatic mission to Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire from January 27 to February 3, 2024.
During her visit to Abuja, Under Secretary Zeya will focus on enhancing collaboration with senior government officials concerning democracy, civilian security, and humanitarian efforts.
Her agenda also includes meetings with religious leaders, civil society representatives, and labor leaders to discuss matters related to freedom of expression, religion, and the protection of worker and human rights.
In Lagos, the Under Secretary will engage with civil society and private sector entities, addressing issues concerning human rights, civilian security, and anti-corruption efforts.
Upon arriving in Abidjan, Under Secretary Zeya is scheduled to deliver closing remarks at the Africa Cup of Nations Youth Forum on Sport Trafficking and Exploitation in Africa. Her participation aims to raise awareness about the perils of irregular migration and combat trafficking in persons.
In various meetings with government ministers, religious leaders, civil society representatives, and multilateral organizations, the Under Secretary will work towards advancing partnerships and cooperation on democracy, governance, human rights, and regional security.
This aligns with the U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability in the region.
