In response to escalating tensions in El Fasher, North Darfur, the United States has issued a pressing call for all armed forces in Sudan to cease attacks immediately.
The Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, stated the urgency of the situation, highlighting concerns over an impending offensive by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its affiliated militias.
The statement expressed deep alarm regarding the potential consequences of an offensive on El Fasher city, particularly for the vulnerable civilian population, including hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals seeking refuge in the area. Credible reports of village destruction by the RSF and affiliated militias further heightened apprehensions, while indiscriminate aerial bombardments by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) compounded the humanitarian crisis.
The United States condemned these actions and stressed the critical need for unhindered humanitarian access to provide life-saving aid to those affected by the conflict.
Urging the leaders of the SAF and RSF to prioritize the well-being of their people, the statement presented a stark choice: escalate violence and perpetuate suffering, risking the disintegration of the country, or opt for de-escalation, facilitate humanitarian access, and engage in genuine negotiations to end the conflict and empower the people of Sudan.
