The United Kingdom has declared an increase in the fees for student and tourist visas. In an announcement by the UK’s Home Office on Friday, the adjustments in visa costs were outlined to provide additional financial support for the public sector.
Starting soon, the cost of a visit visa for stays of fewer than 6 months will see a substantial increase, rising from £15 to £115. Similarly, the fee for a student visa will surge from £127 to £490.
The Home Office emphasised that these fee hikes are intended to allow the government to allocate more resources to the public sector.
The income generated from these visa fees plays a crucial role in sustaining the operations of the Home Office, particularly in the context of immigration and nationality services.
These alterations to visa fees come less than half a year after the UK introduced previous increases in visa application costs and health surcharges. The UK government has been exploring various avenues to enhance funding for essential public services.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, acknowledged the need to secure additional resources for public sector workers but highlighted the necessity of offsetting these costs through means other than tax hikes or increased borrowing to prevent exacerbating inflation.
