Ukrainian Forces Capture Dozens Of Russian Troops In Kharkiv As Kyiv Regains Ground

Ukrainian forces have achieved victory in the ongoing conflict in Kharkiv, capturing dozens of Russian troops near the embattled town of Vovchansk.

Amidst fierce battles in the region, Ukraine’s Khortytsia operational-strategic group spokesperson, Nazar Voloshin, confirmed the capture of approximately 60 Russian soldiers, highlighting a potential turning point in the struggle for control.

Reports indicate that Ukraine now controls 70 percent of Vovchansk, a town that has been ravaged by war and had a prewar population of 17,000. The area has witnessed intense clashes since the Kremlin’s forces launched an offensive on May 10, seizing villages along Ukraine’s northeastern frontier and displacing thousands of civilians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asserted that Russian losses during the Kharkiv offensive exceed those of Ukraine by eightfold, though independent verification of this claim remains elusive. Efforts to reach Russia’s Defense Ministry for comment on these developments are currently underway.

Julian Röpcke, an open data analyst, shared footage suggesting the moment of capture of the Russian troops near Vovchansk. Röpcke noted that this event indicates Russia’s potential loss of ground in the region, with Ukrainian troops reportedly reclaiming several areas with the aid of reinforcements, including a German-supplied ‘Biber’ bridge laying vehicle.

Recent analyses by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based think tank, support claims of Ukrainian advancements within Vovchansk. Geolocated footage from June 2 indicates Ukrainian forces regaining positions along Dukhovna Street in central Vovchansk.

Further footage from June 3 depicts Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in close combat along the same street, suggesting a concerted effort by Ukrainian forces to contest Russian control.

Kostyantyn Mashovets, a Ukrainian military observer, has cautioned against potential Russian claims of repelling a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kharkiv direction. Mashovets highlights the increasing frequency of Ukrainian counterattacks in the region, indicating a volatile and dynamic situation on the ground.
