Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed disappointment over the behaviour of several political figures he assisted during the 2023 general election, stating that many now avoid him.
In a candid conversation with newsmen, Umahi revealed that even National Assembly members, whom he helped ascend to power, are among those distancing themselves from him. Despite this, he remains undisturbed by their actions.
Umahi highlighted that Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi is the only one who openly acknowledges him as a mentor and benefactor. “The others fear that recognising me publicly might anger the state governor, my successor. However, the governor himself acknowledges my role in his emergence,” Umahi said.
This shift in dynamics has led Umahi to forgo political godsons in favour of political friendships. “I will stand against anyone who troubles the governor, as he deserves our respect. I have done my part, stepped down from the stage, and now I must maintain my dignity,” he stated.
Addressing the common issue of conflicts between predecessors and successors, Umahi affirmed that he is not interested in such disputes. “I have been greatly blessed by God, and I refuse to engage in conflicts that typically arise in these situations. Digging a pit for someone else ensures your own failure.”
Umahi pledged his unwavering support for Governor Nwifuru, committing to stand by him for eight years and praising God for giving Nwifuru the grace to unify the state’s leaders. “The longevity of our unity is not our concern, but I have known the governor for 16 years and will continue to support him. I have no regrets in choosing him as my successor, as he and a few others stood by me during the challenging decision to defect to the APC,” he concluded.
