Umuahia Observes Solemn Sit-At-Home In Honour Of Biafra Heroes

Umuahia Observes Solemn Sit-At-Home In Honour Of Biafra Heroes.

Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, was steeped in an unusual quiet on Friday as residents stayed indoors to commemorate fallen Biafra heroes, adhering to a sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The typically vibrant city, known for its bustling markets and lively streets, was transformed into a near-deserted landscape, with businesses shuttered and daily activities grinding to a halt.

Markets, motor parks, and street shops across the city remained closed, while banks and both public and private schools saw no activity. Residents, unable to access banking services, relied on whatever cash they had on hand. The absence of the usual hustle and bustle underscored the widespread compliance with IPOB’s directive.

In place of the city’s customary energy, some youths took to playing football on the empty streets, while others gathered at the entrances of their homes, engaging in discussions about recent national developments. The atmosphere, though subdued, remained peaceful, with no reported clashes between IPOB members and security forces. Notably, security agents were absent from the streets at the time of this report.

The sit-at-home order, an annual observance to honour those who lost their lives during the Biafran struggle, continues to resonate deeply in the region. Umuahia’s compliance reflects the enduring significance of the commemoration for many residents, even as it temporarily halts the city’s economic and social rhythm.

Related developments in Abia State include a recent warning from the Abia Commissioner of Police against uninvestigated court cases, the inauguration of Christian and Muslim pilgrims welfare boards by Governor Alex Otti, and a Senate call for funding to complete the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, highlighting ongoing efforts to address both security and infrastructure challenges in the state.
