A meeting held at the UN Security Council under the Arria-formula, focused on peacebuilding and sustaining peace through comprehensive approaches, provided insights and discussions on ongoing efforts in these areas.

The meeting, organized by Guyana, Japan, and Mozambique, welcomed insightful contributions from various speakers, including Trina Saha, Deputy Political Counselor.

During the meeting, the participants acknowledged the Peacebuilding Commission’s continued work in prevention and peacebuilding throughout 2023.

This highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Security Council and the Commission. The meeting emphasized the need for improved coordination, particularly with upcoming events such as the Summit for the Future in September and the 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review.

Trina Saha, the Deputy Political Counselor, expressed the United States’ commitment to enhancing regional peacebuilding and peacekeeping architectures. She stressed the significance of regional efforts and the coordination of multilateral institutions.

The New Agenda, outlined by the United States, emphasizes the critical importance of strengthening regional peace efforts.

The importance of incorporating the voices of women and youth in peacebuilding and security efforts was underscored during the meeting. Saha emphasized the need to prioritize women and youth in the peacebuilding process. She called on Member States to contribute to positive outcomes on peacebuilding.

The Peacebuilding Commission was encouraged to expand its role in various cross-cutting areas, including human rights, Women, Peace, and Security, Youth, Peace, and Security Agendas, institution building, transitional justice, rule of law, displacement, and climate change.

The upcoming 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review process was highlighted as a crucial opportunity for the Commission to work towards an integrated, strategic, and coherent approach to prevention and peacebuilding.

Ensuring systematic engagement with civil society and international financial institutions was emphasized to coordinate analyses, share lessons, and align strategies.

Saha concluded by expressing the United States’ readiness to continue supporting peacebuilding efforts both within and outside the UN system. The discussions reflected a collective commitment to advancing peacebuilding initiatives on a global scale.
