UNICEF Raises Alarm Over Escalating Child Deaths In Ukraine

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has sounded the alarm once again, drawing attention to the relentless killing of children in war-torn Ukraine. The humanitarian organization reports two confirmed child fatalities and at least 15 injuries in a series of deadly New Year attacks that have gripped the nation.

UNICEF Representative to Ukraine, Munir Mammadzade, expressed deep concern over the destruction of at least eight schools and 10 healthcare facilities, including a maternity hospital, in the past week alone. Mammadzade issued a stark statement on Wednesday, shedding light on the grim situation unfolding across major cities like Dnipro, Lviv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Odesa. Over the past six days, the organization notes that children, families, and critical infrastructure have become targets, leaving a trail of destruction.

“Homes have been destroyed, and millions of children have started 2024 under the sounds of sirens and bombardment, stoking a familiar fear. The cumulative impact of reported casualties, damage to infrastructure, and relentless attacks has turned what should be a season of joy into one marred by dread, fear, and sorrow,” lamented the UNICEF official.

For children left without homes, often in conditions with no heat or water, the situation is dire, particularly with temperatures plummeting to as low as -20°C. UNICEF reports that nearly 1,800 children have been killed or injured since the escalation of the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that the true number is likely even higher.

Mammadzade condemned the ongoing violence, labeling the killing and maiming of children, along with attacks on schools and healthcare, as grave violations of children’s rights that must come to an immediate halt. As the international community grapples with the unfolding humanitarian crisis, UNICEF’s plea for urgent intervention echoes with a sense of urgency and shared responsibility.
