A tragic incident has shocked the University of Jos community in Plateau State.
A 200‑level Agriculture student, Nanpon Timnan, allegedly killed his friend, 300‑level Banking and Finance student Peter Mafuyai, at their off‑campus residence in Rusau village.
The two students were reportedly close friends who spent much of their time together. On the day of the incident, they played football, visited a music recording studio, and returned home. Afterward, Timnan allegedly retrieved a machete. When questioned by other residents about his intentions, he reportedly said he needed it for something.
Timnan then allegedly struck Mafuyai with the machete. Other residents intervened, but the suspect reportedly buried the victim in a shallow grave behind the house. The body was later exhumed and transferred to a morgue for a post‑mortem examination.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear. The Plateau State Police Command has arrested Timnan and invited all individuals present at the scene for questioning as part of their investigation.
The Student Union Government President, Jane Pwajok, confirmed the incident and said the union is working to determine the full details of what happened. She also expressed concerns about the potential impact on the university’s upcoming hosting of the Nigerian University Games 2025.
The university’s Acting Head of Information, Tongdyen Dachung, declined to comment pending confirmation of facts. The Plateau State Police Command has assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
