United Nigeria Airlines Takes Flight, Names Aircraft After Rawlings

United Nigeria Airlines UNA has launched direct commercial flights from Lagos to Accra and Abuja to Accra, as it names an aircraft after late Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings in recognition of his Pan African ideals, yesterday.

The inaugural flight, NUA 0590, is scheduled to depart Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 10:35 a.m. on November 10, 2025, and arrive at Kotoka International Airport, Accra. Speaking on the development, the Chairman of UNA, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo said, “the new routes signal UNA’s transition from a domestic operator to a stronger West African player.”

According to him, the airline is aiming to deepen aviation access within ECOWAS, boost people to people exchange, support trade flows, and provide Nigerian travelers with homegrown options. Okonkwo estimated that over 200,000 passengers fly the Lagos Accra corridor yearly and noted that the airline’s entry has already led to a 50% drop in fares.

The launch of these new routes is expected to boost trade and tourism between Nigeria and Ghana, and also provide convenient travel options for passengers. Prof. Okonkwo emphasized that Nigerian aviation safety standards meet global benchmarks, with pilots recertifying every six months.

The airline’s entry into the market is seen as a positive development for West African aviation, as it provides more options for travelers and promotes regional integration.

The launch marks a significant milestone for United Nigeria Airlines as it expands its operations in West Africa.
