United States Commits To Global Ocean Conservation On World Ocean Day

On the occasion of World Ocean Day, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken stated the United States’  commitment to ocean conservation through a series of strategic initiatives and international partnerships.

In a press statement released on June 7, 2024, Blinken outlined the U.S.’s comprehensive efforts to address critical challenges affecting coastal communities and marine ecosystems.

Central to the U.S. strategy is the advancement of marine protected areas (MPAs) as part of the global 30×30 goal, which aims to conserve or protect 30 percent of the ocean by 2030.

The U.S. encourages other nations to achieve this milestone in their respective waters through the Ocean Conservation Pledge. Additionally, the newly established High Seas Treaty offers a framework for countries to collaborate in creating MPAs beyond national jurisdictions, reinforcing the collective endeavor to enhance ocean health and resilience.

Acknowledging the adverse effects of climate change on marine environments, the U.S. is taking proactive measures to mitigate these impacts. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting ocean-based climate solutions.

President Biden’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience aims to bolster the resilience of coastal communities and marine ecosystems, with a focus on implementing early warning systems and other adaptation strategies in collaboration with island and coastal nations.

Plastic pollution presents another significant threat to marine life, and the U.S. is spearheading efforts to combat this issue. Promoting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture is also a key priority, ensuring food security and economic growth while addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices.

The U.S. is enhancing its Atlantic diplomacy through the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, which involves 38 coastal countries. This initiative focuses on fostering sustainable blue economies, marine conservation, and scientific collaboration.

Secretary Blinken called on countries, organizations, and individuals worldwide to join in taking bold actions to protect the ocean. “Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for our planet, safeguard marine biodiversity, and secure the livelihoods of communities that depend on a healthy ocean,” Blinken stated.
