The Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken paid tribute to the remarkable achievements of women around the world at the 18th Annual International Women of Courage Award Ceremony. The event, held on March 4, 2024, celebrated the courage and resilience of women who have shown extraordinary bravery in advocating for human rights, equality, and justice in their respective communities.
Joined by distinguished officials and leaders, including the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, Secretary Blinken commended the honorees for their unwavering commitment to social change. Notable attendees included Samantha Power, USAID administrator, and Jen Klein, director of the White House Gender Policy Council, among others.
The ceremony highlighted the inspiring stories of the awardees, who hail from diverse backgrounds and are engaged in a range of activism. From advocating for domestic workers in Bangladesh to fighting for democracy in Belarus, these women have demonstrated immense courage in the face of adversity.
One notable absence was Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, a human rights defender from Cuba, who was unable to attend due to government restrictions. Secretary Blinken stated his solidarity with Marta and reiterated the United States’ support for her cause.
Throughout his remarks, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of championing women’s rights as a central pillar of foreign policy, and concrete efforts to promote gender equity, including increased foreign aid and support for women’s political participation and economic empowerment.
Noting the challenges faced by women worldwide, including threats of violence, harassment, and repression, he commended the resilience and determination of women to speak out and effect change.
As the ceremony concluded, Secretary Blinken introduced Dr. Jill Biden, praising her as an extraordinary role model for women and girls.
