In a recent address at the UN Security Council Arria Formula Meeting , U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke about the urgent need for global action to empower women and girls in the face of increasing threats.
The meeting, hosted by Switzerland, aimed to explore the synergies between the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS).
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield noted the importance of reaffirming the principles outlined in CEDAW and Resolution 1325 during the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. She stated the pressing challenges faced by women and girls worldwide, including conflict, repressive regimes, and infringements on their human rights.
Acknowledging the Biden Administration’s commitment, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield outlined concrete strategies, policies, and programs aimed at supporting women and girls globally. These efforts encompass promoting political participation, combating gender-based violence, and ensuring women’s inclusion in the transition to clean energy.
She focused on the need of strengthening partnerships with civil society, particularly women-led organizations and networks, to bolster resilience and democratic governance within communities.
The Ambassador pin pointed about the United States’ historic 10-year commitment through the Global Fragility Act to address the root causes of conflict and gender-based violence.
