The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu’s plea for an order directing involved parties to maintain the status quo amidst his ongoing legal battle to prevent his impeachment. Shaibu filed a suit to thwart the State House of Assembly’s impeachment proceedings against him.
During the court session, Shaibu’s lawyer, Prof. Oladoyin Awoyale, sought substituted service of court documents for some defendants who hadn’t been served yet. Justice Omotosho granted the motion, allowing documents to be posted on the gates of the State House and Assembly.
However, the judge declined Shaibu’s request for maintaining the status quo, citing incomplete service to all defendants. With the court’s Easter vacation approaching, the lawyer was advised to seek permission from the Chief Judge for an expedited hearing.
This marks the second time Shaibu’s plea has been dismissed by the court regarding his impeachment. Previously, an ex-parte motion was rejected, with the court ordering proper service to all defendants.
Shaibu’s suit includes requests for interim injunctions against interference with his rights, privileges, and official duties as deputy governor
. The defendants listed in the suit include the Edo State Government, the Governor, the House of Assembly, and others. The case is adjourned until April 15.
