The National Council of State has expressed strong confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, following its meeting at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.
This marks the first Council of State meeting under President Tinubu’s administration.
The meeting was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by prominent figures, including former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan. Former military leaders Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar participated virtually.
However, notable absentees included former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida, with no reasons provided for their absence.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, announced the council’s decision on his X account. He stated, “The National Council of State has passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his cabinet, after listening to presentations by six ministers and the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.”
The Council, a key advisory body to the President on major policy decisions, includes the Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, serving and retired Chief Justices of Nigeria, and state governors.
Following the meeting, Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, briefed State House correspondents. He announced the council’s unanimous endorsement of President Tinubu’s leadership and expressed satisfaction with his governance of the nation.
The Council also reportedly described the recent #EndBadGovernance protests as an insurrection aimed at regime change, stressing the seriousness of the unrest.
