US Congress Urges President Trump To Impose Sanctions On Nigeria Over Christian Killings

US Congress Urges President Trump To Impose Sanctions On Nigeria Over Christian Killings.

The United States House of Representatives has called on President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Nigeria in response to the escalating violence against Christian communities within the country. This development follows a recent congressional hearing where lawmakers expressed deep concern over the Nigerian government’s failure to protect its Christian population from ongoing attacks by militant groups.

Congressional Hearing Highlights

During the session, legislators criticised the Nigerian authorities for their inaction against militant Fulani herdsmen, who have been implicated in numerous violent incidents targeting Christian communities. Representative Chris Smith, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, highlighted the severity of the situation by referencing a 2024 report from the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa. The report revealed that Nigerians accounted for 90% of all Christians killed worldwide annually.

“Militant Fulani herdsmen are terrorists. They steal and vandalise, they kill and boast about it, they kidnap and rape, and they enjoy total impunity from elected officials. None of them have been arrested or brought to justice,” stated Representative Smith.

Calls for Re-designation and Sanctions

The House criticised the previous administration’s decision to remove Nigeria from the list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) in 2021, despite ongoing religious persecution. Lawmakers are now urging President Trump to redesignate Nigeria as a CPC and consider implementing sanctions if the Nigerian government continues to fail in protecting religious freedoms.

International Implications

The congressional panel’s recommendations underscore the urgency of addressing religiously motivated violence in Nigeria. The potential sanctions aim to pressure the Nigerian government into taking decisive action against perpetrators and ensuring the safety and rights of its Christian population.

As the situation develops, the international community will closely monitor Nigeria’s response to these concerns and the measures taken by the U.S. administration to promote religious freedom and protect vulnerable communities.
