US Embassy Cautions Nigerians On Visa Application Fraud

‘Lying Can Lead to Permanent Visa Bans’

The United States government has renewed its warning to Nigerians over visa fraud, stressing that falsifying information or submitting fake documents during the visa application process can result in permanent bans from entering the United States.

The caution was issued by the United States Embassy in Abuja, which described visa fraud as a serious violation of US immigration law with lifelong consequences.

Embassy Issues Strong Warning

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the embassy made its position clear:

“Visa fraud has serious consequences. Lying or providing fake documents can lead to permanent visa bans under US immigration law. This means you will never go.”

US officials have consistently warned that no agent, consultant, or intermediary can guarantee a US visa or influence the decision of consular officers.

Fake Documents, False Claims in Focus

The embassy cautioned applicants against the use of forged documents, false financial records, and misrepresentation of personal details. It also warned Nigerians to avoid unauthorized visa agents who promise fast-tracked appointments, guaranteed approvals, or special access to embassy officials.

According to US authorities, all visa applications must be completed honestly and through official government channels.

Diplomatic Talks Coincide With Advisory

The visa fraud warning came as US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, to discuss bilateral cooperation and shared priorities between both countries.

Following the meeting, the embassy reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria, stating:

“The United States looks forward to continuing to work together with Nigeria on issues of mutual concern.”

Security Concerns on the Agenda

The discussions took place amid ongoing diplomatic attention on Nigeria’s internal security challenges. In recent months, some US lawmakers have raised concerns over attacks on communities, particularly in the North and Middle Belt regions, describing them as serious violations of religious freedom.

They have called for stronger collaboration between the US and Nigerian governments to protect vulnerable populations and address persistent insecurity.

Only One Legitimate Path to US Visas

US officials reiterated that visa decisions are made solely by trained consular officers and that honesty and transparency remain the only legitimate pathways to obtaining a US visa.

Nigerians were urged to rely exclusively on official US government platforms for visa information and to report suspected cases of fraud, as the embassy continues efforts to protect applicants and preserve lawful travel opportunities between both nations.
