The United States has raised serious concerns and strongly criticised the actions of Zimbabwean authorities for their conduct on August 23.
During the day of presidential, parliamentary, and local elections, authorities conducted a series of raids and arrested at least 39 individuals linked to the Election Resource Centre and the Zimbabwe Election Support Network. These actions targeted lawful, independent, and nonpartisan election observation activities.
The safety and well-being of those taken into custody by the police are of paramount concern. The US is calling on the Government of Zimbabwe to promptly release all detained individuals, return their belongings, and allow the work of election observers to continue without hindrance.
These actions are seen as conflicting with Zimbabwe’s stated commitment to upholding open, equitable, and transparent electoral processes.
The apprehension and detention of civil society figures, including election observers, not only tarnish Zimbabwe’s reputation and international relations but also run counter to assurances given to global partners that non-governmental organisations would be able to observe the elections independently and present unbiased findings.
This situation raises alarms about human rights in Zimbabwe and poses a threat to both democracy and human rights principles.
The United States reiterates its steadfast support for the people of Zimbabwe as they strive to peacefully conclude the electoral process.
