US Hacker Sentenced To Five Years For $4.5 Billion Bitcoin Heist And Laundering Scheme.

Ilya Lichtenstein, the US hacker involved in one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history, has been sentenced to five years in prison. Lichtenstein, who pleaded guilty last year, was convicted of laundering nearly 120,000 stolen Bitcoin from the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange hack in 2016.

At the time of the theft, the Bitcoin was valued at $70 million (£55.3 million) but soared to more than $4.5 billion by the time Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, were arrested. Today, the stolen Bitcoin would be worth double that amount. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) seized $3.6 billion in assets related to the case, marking the largest financial recovery in its history.

Lichtenstein reportedly used advanced hacking techniques to breach Bitfinex’s systems and enlisted Morgan, known as “Razzlekhan” in her hip-hop persona, to help launder the funds. Together, they employed sophisticated methods to cover their tracks, including using fake identities, converting funds to different cryptocurrencies, and purchasing gold coins. According to prosecutors, Lichtenstein even transported the laundered money himself during family trips.

Morgan, who gained viral attention for her “Razzlekhan” music persona, produced rap videos with provocative lyrics, referring to herself as a “bad-ass money maker” and “the crocodile of Wall Street.” She also portrayed herself as a successful entrepreneur and technology expert in published articles, adding to her infamous online presence. She is set to be sentenced on 18 November after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The sentencing judge, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, highlighted the importance of accountability, stating, “It’s important to send a message that you can’t commit these crimes with impunity.” Lichtenstein, who has been in prison since his arrest in February 2022, expressed regret for his actions and indicated he hopes to apply his skills to combat cybercrime after serving his sentence.
