The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has suspended two senior officers at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos following allegations that Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, did not serve his sentence in the facility after being convicted for abusing the naira.
According to a memo issued on Thursday and signed by the board’s secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa and DCC Sikiru Adekunle, both in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, have been suspended pending further investigation. The suspension follows a voice note shared by social critic Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky claimed that his “godfather,” in collaboration with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment.
The memo further detailed the suspension of another officer, ASC II Ogbule Obinna, who is based at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility.
Additionally, DCC Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, in charge of the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, was suspended over allegations of receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
Ahmed explained that the suspensions are intended to allow for thorough investigations into the accusations. The board assured the public that the outcomes of the investigations would be made public once concluded.
This action highlights the Nigerian government’s commitment to addressing alleged infractions within the correctional system.
